SEO costs in Switzerland: the real numbers
4 min readPHTM Consulting
The Swiss SEO market has one defining trait: almost nobody publishes prices. Quotes for the same work vary fivefold, and an SME comparing three offers is really comparing three different definitions of the word "SEO".
Here are the real ranges, what they cover, and the distinction few agencies volunteer: a large part of SEO is paid for once, not every month.
Market rates
Based on rates published by Swiss agencies and consultants, checked in August 2026:
German-speaking Switzerland generally charges more than Romandie, sometimes much more: some Zurich agencies publish retainers of CHF 3'000 to 7'000 per month for work a French-speaking consultant bills at half that.
These numbers do not tell you whether the work is good. They only tell you what the market dares to ask.
What is done once
Part of SEO belongs to how the site is built, not to a subscription:
Page and URL structure. Loading speed. Title tags and descriptions. The sitemap and Search Console, configured. Redirects if the site replaces an older one. One page per service, written to answer the questions your clients actually type into Google.
All of this happens when the site is built or rebuilt, can be verified in a few hours, and does not need redoing every month. If your site was built properly, this work is already paid for. We covered what that build costs in our guide to website prices in Switzerland.
What genuinely repeats
Three things justify recurring work, and only three:
Content. New pages answering new questions. This is the main engine, and it is writing work, not technical magic.
Links. Other Swiss sites pointing to yours: a serious local directory, the chamber of commerce, a guest article. For a local SME, one good link per month is plenty.
Monitoring. Watching what climbs, what stalls, and adjusting. One hour a month, not ten.
An honest monthly retainer for a local SME contains those three lines, itemised. If it contains "ongoing technical optimisation" of an eight-page site, ask what exactly is being optimised each month.
What matters more than the budget
For a local business in French-speaking Switzerland, two levers often beat the classic SEO retainer:
The Google Business profile. For searches like "fiduciaire Nyon", the map appears above the websites. A complete profile with recent reviews and photos takes a few hours and costs nothing.
Pages that state prices. The most searched pages are the ones providers refuse to write: how much it costs, how long it takes, what can go wrong. Answering honestly is the simplest content strategy there is.
Red flags
A guaranteed Google position: nobody controls Google, so the guarantee is a sales argument. A 24-month contract: SEO shows its value within 6 months, and a good provider does not need to lock you in. A monthly report with no list of actions: you are paying for a PDF. A "confidential method": SEO has no secrets, only work.
What to budget, by situation
New, well-built site in a local market: start with the Google Business profile and one content page per month. Near-zero budget if you write it yourself, CHF 300 to 600 per page if you delegate the writing.
Real local competition: a retainer of CHF 500 to 1'000 per month for six months, then re-evaluate on the numbers.
Contested sector or national ambition: CHF 1'500 and up per month, with a provider who shows you, page by page, what was produced.
At PHTM we do not sell SEO subscriptions: most of the ranking work happens when the site is built or rebuilt, and that is where we deliver it. If your site is already live and you are weighing what comes next, tell us what you want to achieve: the diagnostic is free.
Frequently asked questions
How long before results show?
Three to six months for a new page to find its position, sometimes less on quiet local queries. A provider promising results within weeks is talking about Google Ads, not organic ranking.
SEO or Google Ads?
Ads produces visits tomorrow and stops the day you stop paying. SEO takes months and keeps working afterwards. For low-volume local searches, the Google Business profile often beats both. They combine well, but on different horizons.
Can a Wix or Squarespace site rank?
For local visibility, yes. Those tools cover the technical basics. Their limits show in speed and fine-grained control, which matters mostly when competition is serious.
Is a paid audit worth it?
Before a rebuild or after a traffic drop, a one-time audit at CHF 500 to 3'000 is justified. The free audits offered in cold outreach are sales documents: they always find something alarming.
